October 1-3
Thursday I ventured northward for the annual Rodeo of the Mid South and Miss Rodeo of the Mid South Pageant, both held this year at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven in conjunction with the 150th annual Mid South Fair. Thank you to Sue Lynn Perry and Trena Street for inviting me to be a part of one of Mississippi’s great rodeos.
Thursday night’s rodeo was a lot of fun! Miss Rodeo Tennessee, Amber Dell, and I both carried sponsor flags during the rodeo with the reigning Miss Rodeo Arkansas titleholders. I enjoyed riding in front of the Hospitality State crowd and carrying the banner of Dodge Pro Rodeo, a valued PRCA national partner. A hearty thank you to pickup man Shawn Calhoun for allowing me to ride his horses for the rodeo performances.
Friday’s schedule was full of pageant events. The Rodeo of the Mid South Queen committee was extremely gracious and allowed me to interview with the panel of judges for a “mock interview” to help prepare me for the Miss Rodeo America Pageant in December. After all of the contestants had their interviews, we had a fantastic meal at the Rodeo of the Mid South Queen’s Luncheon.
I watched the horsemanship portion of the pageant Friday afternoon with Amber (MRTn) and Mr. Nanney, who had been one of the interview judges that I had just met that morning. Katie Langton Henderson’s twin daughters, Ellie and Lexie, joined the three of us midway through horsemanship and kept us laughing the entire time. Katie was Miss Rodeo Tennessee in 1999 (she was one of the first rodeo queens I met as a young girl) and I had fun getting to know her daughters.
On Saturday morning, the visiting queens and the current Rodeo of the Mid South Queen visited Graceland. Thank you to Graceland for having us! Even though I live only about 2 hours from Graceland, I had never visited Elvis’ famous home. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour of the house and grounds. The décor was astonishing; I did not know how lavish the 1970s were until I saw the “jungle room” and the green shag carpet!
The second and third performances were just as good as the first performance on Thursday…fast team roping, great bull riding, and more! Congratulations to Allie Folks, the new Rodeo of the Mid South Queen and all of the pageant contestants. I had fun spending the weekend with them and can’t wait untill next year’s Rodeo of the Mid South.
